What is stress? Do we really understand what it can do to us, or how well we manage it?
Stress is an adverse mental and emotional state caused by circumstances or events. Stress can be brought on by experiences that we have no control over and also become an issue when we commit to too many things at once. No matter the reasoning for our stress, we need to understand how to manage our stress to increase our overall wellbeing and quality of life. One part that is often overlooked in how our body manages stress is the role that genetics plays in it. We now understand that some individuals handle and manage stress more affectively than others, and that can be largely dependent on their genetics, our environment, and a mixture of coping skills.
Lifestyle changes can positively affect those with genes that do not handle stress well, such as exercise, adequate sleep, recognizing toxins in our environment, and nutritional changes. There are many signs that we are too stressed for our bodies and minds to handle appropriately. We may be deficient in B vitamins (less B vitamins means less serotonin is being produced), poor digestion, and poor relaxation or sleep. Exercise is a great way to naturally produce more serotonin, even small amounts per day. Counseling services for individuals can help them have support and even grant them more interventions that may not be available in other environments, such as Brainspotting, EMDR, and creative therapies such as art and sand-tray! Listen to your body when it is stressed, and create change where change is needed.
